Ayr United vs Tass Thistle
The game started off at a high tempo in wet conditions with Tass having the early pressure and creating a couple of early chances, hitting the crossbar and prompting a good save from Kira Inglis. Ayr soon won a corner which was taken by Amy Miller and found Cobi Welsh, but her shot went over the bar. The girls continued to press forward in numbers with the midfield and striker Danielle Nicholson (pictured) linking up well to create chances for Cobi, Emma Roberston and Hannah McSorley, all of whom forced the Tass keeper to pull off wonderful saves.
Amy and Cobi continued to put pressure on Tass and this eventually paid off when Cobi won a corner kick. The resulting corner led to Danielle heading against the cross-bar however she managed to finish the rebound to put Ayr into the lead.
A few minutes after taking the lead, Tass managed to equalise against the run of play as their winger slotted home from a tight angle.
In the second half Ayr continued to press on through substitute Hannah Connelly and Emma who both had strikes at goal, forcing the Tass goalkeeper into action. Tass again went up the park and from out wide scored via a cross come shot which went into the top corner. Moments later Tass scored again from a goalmouth scramble which saw the ball crawl over the line. Straight from the restart Amy ran at the Tass defence beating several players before putting a great cross into the danger area which Tass scrambled clear just as Hannah was g about to shoot. Megan Cannell was starting to see a lot of the ball down the left wing and was using her pace to great effect. Ayr forced another corner and Amy played a quick one-two with Hannah before firing the ball past the Tass goalkeeper to score.
As Ayr continued to press forward they were caught out on the counter attack and this lead to Tass making it 4-2. Ayr continued to try and get back into the game however, in the last few minutes Tass scored again to put the game beyond doubt.
Afterwards coach Andy McMath said “I am very pleased in the girls today as they constantly put the opposition under pressure and didn’t allow them time to play. I felt throughout the whole match we more than matched if not bettered the opposition even though the scoreline doesn’t suggest this. If we play with the same hunger in the remaining matches we will be hard to break down.”
