Academy 12s put in a solid display against The Steelmen

Academy 12s v Motherwell FC 12s

Ayr United 12s were really up for their game on Saturday as Motherwell visited the west coast and were coming into the game with a good reputation. Both Ayr teams started brightly and were rewarded with early goals. James Maxwell and Robbie Hannah (pictured) both scored what can only be described as contenders for goal of the season. Firstly James pounced on a mistake from the Well goalkeeper by controlling the ball 20 yards from goal before hitting it with his second touch with the ball sailing into the net. It was really smart thinking from the youngster. Robbie Hannah’s goal was also a cracker. He got the ball from 20 yards out and hit a powerful shot that flew past the goalkeeper into the top corner. Coach Michael Taylor said “it was a fantastic goal from Robbie and one of the best I’ve seen this season.”

Ayr’s all round play was solid and Motherwell found it difficult to get a grip on the games. The closing down and counter attacking at times were great to watch from Ayr. The Ayr boys looked dangerous every time they broke forward and Reece McLean and James Maxwell were a constant threat to Motherwell. Hamish Brown was solid at the back and made some important tackles to break up the play and start attacks. Likewise in the other team Callum Bryce was on top form and was concentrating on defending which allowed his team mates to get on the front foot and attack more. Grant Richmond showed great composure at times and was rewarded with two well taken goals. Other goal scorers were Robert Frew, Declan ,McAulay, Aiden Bradford, Joe Barker. Motherwell competed really well and finished the strongest towards the end of the match but they were made to work hard and didn’t find it easy to score. After the games Ayr Coach Michael Taylor said “the boys were terrific. Their attitude was superb and because of this the boys got a lot of success during the game. We were playing a very well organised Motherwell team but I thought the boys gave them a challenge. It was a top performance from all players and I look forward to more of the same in future games”.
