Summer’s Summation Finally
The final tournament of the summer was the Annual National Scottish Cup Competition held by Walking Football Scotland and hosted by Glasgow Green.
This year’s tournament saw 32 teams taking part from all over Scotland with AUFA providing 3 teams namely Ayr Somerset, Ayr Parkhouse and Ayr Beresford.
Eight qualifying sections of four teams each saw the AUFA teams compete for last 16 places.
Ayr Somerset narrowly came out of their group on goal difference whilst Ayr Parkhouse narrowly lost out despite a fine 2-0 win overHearts 98s FC. Ayr Beresford also competed well in a difficult section including Hearts FC 56s and Gretna FC.
In the last 16 Ayr Somerset defeated holders Midlothian 4-1, Quarter Finals a 5-2 win against North West and then a 3-1 semi-final win against St James.
This then another final for the AUFA team against last year’s finalists Gretna FC. The Ayr team led 2-0 with 5 mins left but conceded two goals in the remaining minutes to produce yet another penalty kick shoot out. Gretna who had won both their quarter-final and semi-final in similar fashion did so again and Ayr Somerset were to finish runners up.
Unfortunately in this occasion a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!
How often have we seen this in the past with Scotland sides and AUFA teams! However, overall a great day of Walking Football superbly organised by chairman Gary McLaughlin, his committee, trustees and partners.
A great season for AUFA Walking Football supported by our Football for Life Group and Walking Football Committee.
A new centre now opened at Girvan to go with centres in Ayr, Prestwick, Maybole and Troon. An average of 80 players playing on a weekly basis is tremendous for both physical and mental health as well as combating social isolation.
Next up will be the AUFA Touring Team re-visiting Browns, Vilamoura, Portugal in early October.
