Ayr United Under 18s returned for pre-season training
Ayr United Under 18s returned for pre-season training earlier than normal on Saturday 23rd June in preparation for the new season.
With five weeks training completed, 13 training sessions and 5 friendly matches the team now move into week 6. Three further sessions this week will lead into the first league game due this coming Friday evening at home to Greenock Morton.
The five games to date all proved testing in their own way and have provided some excellent match fitness along the way.
First up was an away fixture v Cantera 18s from Paisley and although 2-1 behind at the interval Ayr fought back well in the second half to register a fine 6-2 victory. Goals from Andrew Heaney (2), Kaylum Ferguson, Ross Love (Pen) Joy Goma and Nathan McSkeane secured the win.
Next up was another away game this time against Elite opponents Motherwell. A very hard fought game played almost like a cup tie saw the Ayr men go down to a single goal defeat to a strong, physical Motherwell side. There was very little to choose between the teams apart from only goal of the game early in the second half.
Two days later the Ayr side faced up to Hurlford 19s BC at Belmont Academy who had reached the Scottish BC Cup Final only a few weeks previously. Again, a very hard fought game played at a decent intensity saw the home side register their second victory of the pre-season with a single goal scored by midfielder Robbie Laurie. In truth this was a more comfortable win than the score line suggests with Ayr dominating most of the game and being defied on numerous occasions by resolute defending and an excellent goalkeeper.
Onto games four and five and again two games in three days. First up was a home fixture v Auchinleck BC 19s played at the excellent Cumnock Juniors Astro Pitch at Townhead Park where Ayr United 18s will play their home fixtures this season. This was again to prove a good test for the Honest Men as Auchinleck were a well organised side who had a physical edge to their play. A good hard earned 3-1 win for the home side with goals from Joe Barker, Joy Goma and Kaylum Ferguson.
The final pre-season game saw Ayr travel away to play Stirling Albion who had just registered a very good 1-1 draw with Elite opponents Heart of Midlothian. The Ayr side secured a solid 2 goal lead by the interval which in truth should have been more comfortable. The home goalkeeper pulling off a number of fine saves although unable to keep out goals from Joe Barker and Nathan McSkeane. Ayr made seven changes in the second half to provide important match fitness for the squad but managed to see out a good 2-1 win on the day.
The Ayr team have in the last fortnight added goalkeeper Craig Burns, winger Joy Goma and striker Nathan McSkeane to improve and add depth to their squad.
It is likely this week will see a further addition to the playing squad.
Ayr’s coaching team of John Crawford, Craig Dargo and Stuart Galloway are optimistic that the Ayr side will be competitive this year and expect a good season from their men.
