Sunday 27th August 2017 Ayr United U11 Girls travelled to Townhead Park to take on Cumnock Juniors U11 Girls.
Ayr had a bright start to the match and came close to breaking the deadlock first, when Cairney got herself onto the end of Karlii’s through ball, but the final strike headed just wide of the post.
United continued to pile on the pressure, winning a couple of corners, but just couldn’t covert into goals. At the back, Beth was defending well for United, and was pivotal in breaking up any engineered Cumnock attacks.
The game then started to swing in Cumnock’s favour as they got a shot away, just wide of the post, and seconds later the Ayr woodwork was rattled once more. Ayr failed to recognised the danger that was on display, as they switched off during a Cumnock throw-in, and the hosts took full advantage to take the lead.
This spurred United back into action, as they fought to get back into the game, when Karlii won a corner followed up by a long range shot which sailed just over the crossbar. In the closing stages of the first period, Ayr United goalkeeper Amy was quick off her line to end an one on one attack at the front post, and the last action was Karlii skipping past three home players to fire a strike into the wrong side of the netting.
Jenna kicked off the second period for United, and galloped up the wing to the byline, with her cross winning a corner.
Our hosts then allowed a throw-in from Olivia to reach Sophie’s feet, and she then took the ball quickly through their defence to level up the game.
Cumnock responded alertly, when their number seven, powered through the midfield to then send the ball slightly wide of the Ayr post.
Cumnock got another break shortly afterwards and forced Amy into making two fantastic saves, but on the third strike, Cumnock regained the lead.
Soon after they extended their lead even further heading into the last period with a comfortable goal cushion.
Out for the third and final period and Cumnock continued with their barrage on the Ayr goal as Hattie, Yaris and Rachel worked well to minimise the damage.
Cairney did well to find space to then take the ball up into Cumnock’s box but her final ball headed out wide.
Kimberley presented great skill in order to get past two defenders but just couldn’t find the back of the net. A
yr’s perseverance finally paid off as Sophie linked up well with Jenna to pull off a one two which Sophie neatly finished for her second goal of the day.
The United comeback was just too late in starting however as Ayr couldn’t bring the scoreline back as Cumnock took the win.
