Aberdeen Community Trust Walking Football Tournament
The Somerset Park men were undefeated last year in winning the Inagural Tournament and were determined to follow on in similar style.
The journey to and from Aberdeen was made in atrocious weather conditions with Aberdeen City being declared a ‘flooded area!’ David Watson did a marvellous job of driving the team to the venue in the Academy mini-bus with Lindsay Easton making the return journey another joy to behold! Quiz Master ‘Chopper’ Crawford kept the ‘troops’ on their toes with some ‘tricky quiz questions’ en route.
The tournament itself saw the Honest Men play seven games in a ’round robin’ format winning 6 and drawing 1. Ayr first fronted up against ‘old foes’ Hearts of Midlothian which resulted in a creditable 2-2 draw.
The Ayr team then won their next 6 games defeating Moray, Dons, Ardler Wanderers, Victoria, Edinburgh City and Orion.
An excellent tournament from the Ayr United ‘old timers’ with a ‘debut goal’ from Ayr Chaplain Jim Smith who ‘sparkled in his first tournament.
The Ayr Squad was as follows : Stuart Galloway (The Flying Sloth), Jim Smith (Padre), Lindsay ‘The Snail’ Easton, ‘David ‘Winker’ Watson, Nikos ‘The Greek’ Kukos, David ‘Lefty’ Reid, Raymond ‘The Shuffler’ Paterson, John ‘Chopper’ Crawford and Harry ‘The Ghost’ Harvie.
The Honest Men now head to St Johnstone this coming weekend with Alloa and Then the National Tournament to follow at Glasgow Green.
