Walking Footballers continue to grow in numbers
As our Walking Footballers continue to grow in numbers and with the various local centres well attended it is worth a look at the opportunities to play both competitively or non-competitively. On average our centres in Ayr, Prestwick, Maybole and Troon number a healthy weekly average of 80 attendees.
There are opportunities to participate in official tournaments organised by Walking Football Scotland and chaired by our very own Gary McLaughlin.
There are also further opportunities to venture further afield to compete in tournaments in England and also in Europe with such as Portugal and more recently in Spain.
These tours have proven to be both very popular and very successful in terms of meeting and playing against a variety of teams from all over Europe.
Lasting friendships are made and social activities enjoyed, as well as the longer term benefits of promoting good physical and mental health.
Walking Football is organised by the Academy’s Walking Football Group which is a sub group of the Football for Life Group.
Jason Butler is the Academy’s Walking Football Co-ordinator who organises and plans Walking Football Sessions, Meetings and general structure. Jason is supported by a number of volunteers who make up the Walking Football Group. For tours to Portugal and Spain a number of key people are involved including such as our ‘evergreen’ David Watson, Drew Boyd, Gordon Ferrie, Gary McLaughlin, Andrew Downie and the ‘indefatigable’ James ‘Tiberious’ Kirk.
A special mention must go to our ‘seventy something’ James T Kirk who put in many hours of booking flights, seats and general organisation to ensure our Spain tour ran smoothly. Jim is an ‘avid’ Stranraer supporter and it is recently rumoured that his ‘striking skills’ have not gone unnoticed by the ‘Stranraer hierarchy’.
It may well be that JTK will be turning out next season in the blue of Stranraer as well as the black and white of Ayr United’s Walking Football Team!!
However, ‘the last word’ on Spain should give a ‘special mention’ to the players who represented our ‘touring team’ on this occasion as follows : Stuart Galloway, Lindsay Easton, David Reid, Sandy Lawrie, Tom Dowman, Peter Winchester, James T Kirk and John Crawford.
The results could have been better but the ‘craic’ was great. Until the next time ………… Keep well everyone your company was superb!!
