  • Motherwell 17s v Ayr United 17s

    ayr 17's vs motherwell

Honest Men’ made the journey through to Lanarkshire to play the ‘Steelmen’.

Following an excellent away win to Hibernian the ‘Honest Men’ made the journey through to Lanarkshire to play the ‘Steelmen’.ayr 17's wrmup drill vs motherwellAnother tough encounter yet again was on the cards and so it proved to be. The game kicked off with Motherwell very much on the front foot and pushing hard for an opening goal. Ayr however defended resolutely as they had done in the previous away encounter to Hibernian. If ever this was needed it came to pass in the 7th minute when following a succession of corners the Ayr defensive line held firm ....... but only just! Following yet another corner the Motherwell striker shot from 10 yards out. As the ball came back off the inside of the far post Ayr keeper Graham made a superb stop to scoop the ball off the line. As the ball broke to a Motherwell player Graham again made a super stop to block the shot. Once again the ball fell to a Motherwell player and this time two Ayr defenders blocked the shot on the goal line before clearing the danger. Terrific defensive work by the Ayr team who then started to produce some very good passages of play down both sides of he pitch. In 11 minutes a good combination down Ayr’s left flank saw the ball arrive at Robbie Laurie’s feet. The big midfielder let fly from some twenty five yards out and although the Motherwell keeper managed to keep the ball out Ayr striker Danny Mitchell finished from 6 yards.17's warm up vs motherwell Four minutes later following good link up play between Aidan Moffat and David Oliphant,  the full back’s cross was partially blocked. Danny Mitchell fired in a fierce shot which was well parried by the home keeper. Ayr were now gaining much more control of the ball and several good penetrating runs down Ayr’s right side saw Logan Angus and Robert Frew linking up well. Robert Frew had a couple of efforts at goal but couldn’t quite get enough power to seriously trouble the keeper. The first half ended with Ayr having the one goal advantage for their efforts.

Half Time : Motherwell 0 Ayr United 1

The second half was always going to see the home side push for an equaliser but as in the first half Ayr’s shape, organisation and tenacious attitude saw them stand firm. In fact Ayr very nearly extended their lead on the hour mark when a good head flick from Robert Frew saw Aidan Moffat finish with aplomb only to see the far linesman’s flag raised for a close offside call. Ayr then replaced their hard working striker Daniel Mitchell with Gabe Skeoch as they looked to give the home team a different type of problem. Motherwell then changed their shape to a 3-5-2 set up in an attempt to make the all important break through. In 65 minutes the equaliser duly arrived as for the first time in the game Ayr’s shape was found wanting. An overlapping run down Ayr’s left side saw a 2 v 1 situation occur and when the cross came in the Motherwell striker headed home neatly from 10 yards. Game on and Ayr now had to show further resilience. However, as has been evident from the turn of the year this Ayr side now has ‘a bit about them’ and they proceeded to take the game to Motherwell. Within 5 minutes Ayr had regained the lead and this time following very good play down Ayr’s left side. Full back Oliphant fed Ayr striker Gabe Skeoch who had pulled his marker out wide. The ball was then patiently worked across Motherwell’s box to the right side. Robert Frew took a touch and passed the ball to Skeoch who ran across his marker to finish well from 8 yards. A very well worked team goal which has been a feature of recent performances. Robbie Laurie was next to have an attempt at goal and his fierce shot from 20 yards was well saved by the Motherwell keeper at full stretch. Ayr then very nearly produced what would surely have been ‘a contender for goal of the season’. Determined play from full back Logan Angus saw his cross flighted into the box. Ayr forward Robert Frew with his back to goal showed great inventiveness by taking the ball on the full volley across his left shoulder and was desperately unlucky to see his ‘hitch kick’ effort beat the keeper all ends up but crash back off the underside of the crossbar to safety.   A terrific piece of play by the Ayr midfielder. Ayr then lost their influential centre back Ross Love unluckily to injury. A quick reshuffle saw Lewis Nohar come on to take up a midfield role in front of Logan Angus with Aidan Moffat moving into centre midfield and Robert Frew moving to the left. Ayr then had to endure some pressure from the home team in the closing stages of the game. Motherwell did have an opportunity to level the game  in added time but Ayr keeper Graham comfortably held the Motherwell striker’s effort.Full Time : Motherwell 1 Ayr United 2

Ayr Head Coach John Crawford was again very happy with the team performance. Crawford said, ‘Another very good 3 points on the road. A hard earned but well deserved win purely down to how well every player worked and supported each other all over the pitch’. The coach added, ‘there is a real togetherness about the team which comes from a good dressing room, good team spirit and a desire to be successful’.

Ayr United : Graham, Angus, Bryce, Love, Oliphant, Griffiths, Laurie, Frew, Barker, Moffat, Mitchell. Subs : Skeoch, Smith, Nohar, Wamazuri.
