Ayr entered two teams, namely Ayr and Prestwick and drawing their players from the Academy Walking Football Centres at Whitletts, Caledonian, Maybole and Straiton. A round robin tournament of 6 teams included two from hosts Stewarton, two from old foes, Hearts of Midlothian and the two Academy sides providing 5 games for each of the teams. Both Academy Teams performed creditably with the Ayr ‘all whites’ winning four of their games and finishing runners up to Hearts.

Inevitably there were of course some ‘controversial highlights’ which is often a feature of our Academy ‘senior players’. Gordon Ferrie captaining the ‘all reds’ Prestwick team managed to perform his very own version of an ‘Eric Cantonaesque’ Kung Fu kick at an opponent but fortunately missed his ‘target’! On this occasion however to be fair Gordon did stop short of chasing the poor chap into the large crowd of spectators!

Old campaigner John Crawford, managing the all whites’ Academy Team, however, ‘didn’t miss his target’ and duly received his ‘first red card’ of the season for a WWE ‘body slam type move’! Ian Mason playing in the ‘Ayr v Prestwick’ Academy ‘Derby Match performed a ‘Killie sliding tackle’ catching Crawford on the ankle. Mason was heard to say, ‘ I got there as soon as I could!’ Crawford quipped, ! Book a taxi next time son!’

Prestwick’s Tom Dowman making his Academy tournament debut certainly impressed with his ‘running off the ball’ but sadly didn’t impress the officials as he racked up numerous free kicks against his team! No such worries for ‘the reds’ veteran defender Lindsay ‘the snail’ Easton who covered the ground with a lot less speed and fuss! Lindsay on the pitch tends to compare favourably with someone driving their car at 20mph on a motorway! Nae chance of the big man being booked for speeding!

With the first tournament of the Walking Football Circuit having taken place Portugal now beckons for the Academy Team in 3 weeks time. Vilamoura is again the destination for Brown’s Walking Football Tournament.
Further updates will appear on the website as the Academy Team prepares at their Training Camp on the ‘dark side of Mordor!
