Ayr nearly had the perfect start to the game when McRoberts saw his shot from the edge of the box in the first minute of the game hit off the left hand post and bounce back into the Morton keepers’ hands. 5 minutes later Morton number 16 saw his shot from distance hit off the crossbar. Ayr took the lead 14 minutes into the game when McLymont played the ball out wide to Craig on the left who crosses the ball into the box. The ball was met on the edge of the box by Hay who took a shot that went low into the left hand side of the net. Morton had the chance to equalise 2 minutes later when their number 2 made a great run down the right wing and crossed the ball into the box but their number 9s shot from 2 yards out went over the bar. Morton got their equaliser 20 minutes into the game when the ball was lost in the Ayr half and it was played out wide to the Morton player who took a shot. His shot was saved by Ecrepont but Morton number 9 scored the rebound from a couple of yards out. 10 minutes before half time, Fraser took a shot from just outside the box that was denied by a great save from the Morton keeper to push the ball away. The teams went into half time with the score level. Ayr took the lead in the game again in the 63rd minute when Fraser took a free kick from 30 yards out that was played into the box and headered into the top left corner of the net by Maguire from 6 yards out. The free kick from Fraser was one of a number of great free kicks he took in the second half of the game. Maguire nearly got another goal 2 minutes after his first when McRoberts shot from 8 yards was saved by the keeper and Maguire got the rebound but his shot went past the right hand post. In the 85th minute Morton saw their players shot hit off the crossbar and the ball was cleared by Fraser. A minute later they got their equaliser. A cross was played into the box and it was tapped into the net from 6 yards out by their number 9, his second of the game. In the 89th minute, Ayr had the chance to win the game when Cullen made a solo run into the box and took a shot but the keeper got a hand to it and it was cleared by the Morton defender. A minute into stoppage time Morton could have won the game when their number 9 was denied his hattrick after his shot hit off the right hand post and was cleared by the Ayr defence. With both teams having a chance to win it in the final few minutes, a draw was a fair result for both teams in the rainy conditions.
