Ayr United V Motherwell U16 Match Report by Karen Malcolm
On Sunday afternoon, Ayr United Under 16s hosted Motherwell in the CAS U16 Trophy Section. The Honest Men won 1-0 thanks to a great strike from Milliken.
The Honest Men have been drawn in the Trophy Section against Motherwell, Rangers, St Mirren, Hamilton Academical and Celtic.
The Honest Men took an early lead as they scored on the 4th minute of the match. Ayr were awarded a free kick following a shove on Fraser, the right back took the free kick and crossed the ball into the box. McNally rose to win the ball; however, the centre back was knocked down, and the ball broke to the edge of the box where Milliken was placed and hit the ball first time, his effort fired into the goal past the Motherwell keeper. Ayr United came close to doubling their lead on the stroke of half time after Cullen made a great run down the right wing and crossed the ball to the edge of the 6-yard box, unfortunately for Ayr the Motherwell player got in front of Allan to stop him from having an effort on goal and McRoberts effort was saved low by the Motherwell keeper. In the 63rd minute, Ayr United created another great chance to try and get another goal against the young Steelmen. McRoberts drove towards the box and slipped the ball into the path of Cullen however Cullen’s strike from just inside the box was denied by the Motherwell keeper. Ayr United made 2 substitutions in the second half. The first substitution saw goal scorer Milliken replaced by D Craig and the second substitution saw Hay replaced by Hislop.
The early goal from Milliken and a disciplined team performance throughout ensured the Honest Men got the win over their elite opposition.
